About the Author:
Quiara Alegría Hudes wrote the book for the Broadway musical In the Heights, which received the 2008 Tony Award for Best Musical, a Tony nomination for Best Book of a Musical and was a Pulitzer Prize finalist. Hudes is on the board of Philadelphia Young Playwrights, which produced her first play in the tenth grade. She lives in New York with her husband and daughter.
About the Book:
Water by the Spoonful follows Elliot, a 19-year-old marine, as he struggles to find his place in the world upon returning from Iraq. While he copes with the monotony of day-to-day life, somewhere in a chat room, four recovering addicts forge an unbreakable bond of love and support. The boundaries of family and friendship are stretched across continents and cyberspace in this heartfelt, poetic meditation on lives on the brink of redemption in an uncertain time.
"A beautiful, heartbreaking knockout of a play, as startling and innovative and human on the page as on the stage." ― Junot Díaz
Water by the Spoonful is the second installment of Hudes's The Elliot Trilogy, which began with the Pulitzer Prize finalist Elliot, A Soldier's Fugue and will conclude with The Happiest Song Plays Last, which will premiere at Chicago's Goodman Theatre in spring 2013.
"How many plays make us long for grace? Water by the Spoonful is such a rare play; it is a yearning, funny, deeply sad and deeply lyrical piece, a worthy companion to Hudes's Elliot, A Soldier's Fugue. The play infects us with the urge to find connection within our families and communities and remains with us long after we've left the theatre." ― Paula Vogel
