Ayad Akhtar: Discussion and Signing

Thursday, November 9, 2017 - 5:30pm

The Drama Book Shop is pleased to welcome Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Ayad Akhtar (Disgraced) for a discussion and signing of his new play, Junk on Thursday, November 9 at 5:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

Ayad Akhtar, who won the Pulitzer Prize for Disgraced, returns to LCT this fall to begin our 33rd season at the Beaumont. In his new play, JUNK, he takes on the high-flying, risk-seeking, teetering financial world of the 1980s. The lead character, financier Robert Merkin, draws more than a little from the real junk bond kings of the day. Merkin is attempting to take over an iconic American manufacturing company, changing the rules as he goes. With his brilliance matched only by his financial swagger, Merkin sets in motion nothing less than a financial civil war, pitting magnates against workers, lawyers against journalists, and ultimately, pitting every one against themselves. This is a play about how, while most of us weren't watching, money became the only thing of real value.

Steven Pasquale (The Bridges of Madison County and TV’s “Rescue Me”) leads the large cast as Robert Merkin. Director Doug Hughes (The House in Town at LCT, and Tony winner for Doubt) brings it all to life in the Beaumont with John Lee Beatty (sets), Catherine Zuber (costumes), Ben Stanton (lighting), Mark Bennett (original music and sound) and 59 Productions (projections).
