Hudson Theatre, 141 West 44th Street, New York, NY 10036. Previews begin March 15, 2019. Opens April 16.
The place is a Manhattan loft shared by Anna, a lithe young dancer-choreographer, and her two gay roommates—her collaborator, Robby, who has just been killed in a freak boating accident, and Larry, a world-weary, caustically funny young advertising executive. As the play begins Anna is recovering from attending Robby's funeral, comforted by her wealthy, well-meaning boyfriend, Burton, a sci-fi screenwriter whose persistent proposals of marriage Anna finds herself unable to accept. Then, with sudden, unexpected explosiveness, Robby's older brother, Pale, bursts on the scene. He has come to collect his brother's belongings—but stays on to transform the action of the play and the lives of those in it. Menacing, profane, dangerous and yet oddly sensitive, Pale is both terrifying and fascinating and, in the end, the one who brings to Anna the unsettling but compelling love that, despite her fears and doubts, she cannot turn away.
The original production of Burn This premiered Off-Broadway in 1987 starring John Malkovich as Pale and Joan Allen as Anna. The play transferred to Broadway that same year for a critically acclaimed run at the Plymouth Theatre, earning Allen a Tony Award for her performance.
The 2019 Broadway revival is produced by David Binder. The design team includes three Tony Award winners: Derek McLane (sets), Clint Ramos (costumes), and Natasha Katz (lights). 101 Productions, Ltd will be the General Manager.
Jake Gyllenhall has been confirmed to star in the recently announced 2017 Broadway revival of Lanford Wilson'sBurn This. The production will add a special extra distinction. It will be the first production to play the resurrected Hudson Theatre in five decades. Tony-winning Spring Awakening director Michael Mayer, most recently represented on Broadway with the Tony-winning revival of Hedwig and the Angry Inch, will direct the Broadway revival.
