Alex Webb: READING "Amelia"

Thursday, January 11, 2018 - 5:00pm

The Drama Book Shop is pleased to welcome Alex Webb with his play "Amelia." The event will consist of a reading of his play, followed by a reception.

AMELIA is an epic Civil War story of one woman's courageous journey to find her husband at all costs. The story turns on a little-known piece of history; over five hundred women masqueraded as men and fought, won medals and died on the battlefields of the Civil War.

Critical praise for Amelia:

"Amelia thrums with a cast of ghostly personae."
- New York Times

"Brings a corner of the Civil War vividly to life … rich in language, history and ideas … tour de force. Webb's play mines an intriguing sidebar of the Civil War - several hundred women fought in the war disguised as men."
- (Editor's Pick) - The Washington Post

"Amelia recreates Civil War history with uncanny accuracy and delivers a knockout story of young lovers caught up in one of history’s great wars."
- History News Network

"Alex Webb has crafted an ingenious tale…The narrative is historical, yet relevantly feminist, emotionally brutal, yet romantic, and constantly upsetting, yet amusing."
- Backstage

"To say that it was an evening of magic is to sell it short. It was the kind of production that gave hope to the heart, joy to the soul and a sorrow leavened by admiration and wonder."
